Dwight Lang, University of Michigan lecturer and adviser of the student group ‘First Generation College Students@Michigan’, describes some of the challenges and biases that first generation students, many of whom are low income, often encounter. Lang states that three interrelated elements: finances, family and community concerns, and campus culture, define the First-Gen Blues and often negatively influence the college experience for many of these students.
