In this opinion piece, the author states that college faculty and administrators need to be aware of their attitudes of minority, low-income and first generation students as being at risk, vulnerable or disadvantaged. He states that these negative labels are a problem for these students at the outset of their academic career and need to be rethought and revised. His suggestion that the term ‘rising scholars’ be replaced to describe a group who already know life’s challenges even before they begin their college education.
